The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
